According to a recent report, AMD is preparing to launch a new graphics card RX 9070 GRE, which will be positioned between the RX 9070 series and the upcoming RX 9060 series. Until yesterday, no specifications of this card had been revealed, so it was speculated that it could have 16GB of VRAM, especially if AMD used the same GPU die as the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT.
But now according to a new report from Chinese media outlet BenchLife, AMD is indeed going to use the same Navi 48 GPU die in the RX 9070 GRE, but with a change in its memory configuration. According to the report, this graphics card will have 4GB less VRAM, meaning it will have a total of 12GB VRAM.
Along with this, the memory interface of the RX 9070 GRE will also be reduced to 192-bit from 256-bit in the RX 9070 and 9070 XT. As a result, the bandwidth will also be reduced to 480 GB/s from 640 GB/s in the RX 9070 and XT.
Our review found that the RX 9070 XT’s 16GB VRAM was enough for gaming at 1440p resolution (although AMD claims it can do 4K gaming as well, but we don’t recommend it for AAA 4K games). So if the RX 9070 GRE only has 12GB VRAM, it may struggle at 1440p in some modern games, as we’ve seen many new games use more than 9GB of VRAM.
However, VRAM alone doesn’t determine performance. Processing power (such as compute units or stream processors) also plays an important role, but this new report doesn’t provide any information about it.
Talking about pricing, if AMD launches this card in the $350-$400 price range, then 12GB VRAM won’t be seen as a major drawback. Now it remains to be seen with what price and specifications AMD brings this card to the market.
The report also states that, initially, the launch of the RX 9070 GRE will be focused in China, which is similar to other cards in the GRE series, which are usually launched first in Asia and later in other markets.
