Microsoft removes $1 Game Pass trial offer ahead of ‘Black Ops 6’ launch

Microsoft has reportedly removed the $1 Xbox Game Pass 14-day trial from stores ahead of the launch of the highly-anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on October 25, 2024.

This strategic timing is similar to what the Redmond company adopted ahead of Bethesda’s Starfield release in September 2023. The company has followed this pattern of adjusting Game Pass offers around high-profile game launches.

With the removal of the $1 Xbox Game Pass 14-day trial, players who want to access Black Ops 6 via Game Pass at launch will now have to subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate, priced at $20 per month. The move is aimed at encouraging users to adopt higher-tier subscriptions to get access to these key games.

For those who don’t know, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is an upcoming first-person shooter game being published by Activision. It is the seventh entry in the Black Ops sub-series, coming after Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (2020).

Set in 1991, Black Ops 6 sees rogue operatives Troy Marshall and Frank Woods assemble a team to pursue the Pantheon, a covert force that has infiltrated the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The Pantheon has marked all those who oppose them as traitors to the United States.

Along with the single-player campaign, Black Ops 6 will also feature multiplayer modes, large-scale warfare, and a cooperative round-based Zombies mode, where players will face undead groups in cooperative play.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will be released on October 25, 2024. Game Pass tier options that provide access to Black Ops 6 on launch day include Game Pass Ultimate for $19.99 per month and PC Game Pass for PC gamers for $11.99 per month. However, the Xbox Game Pass Standard tier for $14.99 per month excludes the launch day release, which means it will not make Black Ops 6 available at launch.

In addition, the game will also be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Those who have already pre-purchased Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 can begin downloading the game on Monday, October 21 at 9:00 AM PT. This pre-load time applies to all platforms—PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Activision has also confirmed that the download will include all of Black Ops 6’s content, including Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies modes.
