Samsung Discontinues Software Updates for Galaxy S20 Series

Samsung launched its premium Galaxy S20 series in 2020, with the Galaxy S20 Ultra being the first smartphone to come with 100x zoom, which the company promoted as “Space Zoom”. At the time, Samsung promised four years of security updates and three years of Android OS updates for all phones in the series.

Now, the Galaxy S20 series—which includes the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra—has finally completed its journey. Samsung has removed them from its Software Update Schedule. Although four years of updates were promised for these devices, the company also gave them extra time by putting them on a quarterly update schedule starting in April 2024.

The Galaxy S20 series received a March 2025 security update, but now the company has decided to completely stop software support for these 2020 flagship phones. However, the Galaxy S20 FE, which launched in October 2020, is still on the Quarterly Security Update schedule, meaning it will continue to receive a security update every three months—though that too will not be active for much longer.

Since the Galaxy S20 series is now running on Android 13-based One UI 4, this could be the right time to upgrade to a new Galaxy model. Not only will you get the latest technology from Samsung, like Galaxy AI in the new Galaxy phones, but if you buy a phone from the Galaxy S25 series, you will continue to get 7 years of software updates.

The Galaxy S25 series, which comes with Android 15 and One UI 7, will remain updated in terms of software until Android 22. Software updates are not only important to keep your phone and data secure, but they also let you experience new features and improvements from the company.

Conclusion: If you’re a Galaxy S20 user, now’s the time to upgrade!
