Do you recall Skype? You may still be using it, but Microsoft has now decided to shut it down.
Skype service will be discontinued
Microsoft has confirmed that Skype will be officially retired on 5th May 2025. This internet calling platform, launched in 2003, became a popular way to connect people around the world. However, with the change in technology over time and after unsuccessful attempts to introduce a new form of Skype, Microsoft has decided to focus its entire attention on Microsoft Teams.
What alternatives do Skype users have?
If you have a Skype account, you’ll have two choices:
- Export your data – You can download your message history, group chats, contacts, and shared photos.
- Switch to Microsoft Teams – You can log in to Microsoft Teams with your Skype account, so your data will be transferred automatically.
Migration to MicrosoftTeams
Microsoft is making this announcement so that users can get enough time to decide whether they want to switch to Microsoft Teams or export their data.
If you continue to use Microsoft Teams (free), note that some Skype features will no longer be available. For example, you will no longer be able to make local and international calls using Skype Credit. However, the Skype Credit you have will still be able to be used until the next renewal period.
What will happen with the Skype phone number?
If you have a Skype phone number, you’ll have to transfer it to another calling provider. Microsoft will temporarily make Skype Dial Pad available in Teams to use existing credits and subscriptions. However, you will no longer be able to buy any new calling plan.
With Skype being discontinued, Microsoft Teams is going to be the communication platform of the new age. So, if you are using Skype, backup your data soon or plan to migrate to Teams.
What does the free version of Microsoft Teams provide?
On the other hand, the free version of Microsoft Teams brings with it many of the important features of Skype, like one-on-one and group calling, messaging, and file sharing. Additionally, it also offers additional features like free meeting hosting, calendar management, and community tools.
Reasons to shut down Skype
Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis. eBay purchased it in 2005 but later sold a 65% stake to companies such as Silver Lake, Andreessen Horowitz, and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Eventually, in 2011, Microsoft purchased Skype for $8.5 billion.
In recent years, services such as Facebook Messenger, Apple FaceTime, and WhatsApp have become the main means for people to communicate. Furthermore, due to the decline in the number of calls made through Skype phone numbers, Microsoft has decided to discontinue this service.
Skype for Business will continue
It’s important to note that Microsoft is only shutting down the consumer version of Skype. Skype for Business is a separate service and is not affected by this change..
