Windows 11’s much-awaited Recall feature, as well as Click to Do and Semantic Indexing, are now out of the preview stage and are being officially included in the May 2025 Patch Tuesday Update.
Microsoft has started rolling out these features in the preview version of Windows 11’s next monthly update, which is expected to be fully available on May 13, 2025.
What is the Recall feature?
Windows Recall is an AI-powered feature that acts as a photographic memory for your computer. It takes continuous snapshots of your screen and saves them locally on your device. The content in these snapshots is scanned and interpreted by an AI model to help you explore your screen history in natural language — like which apps, documents, websites, or chats you visited.
This feature is off by default, meaning it needs to be turned on manually. Once turned on, it screenshots your active screen every few seconds.
Security and Privacy
Snapshots and their data are saved in encrypted form on your local drive.
This data is shared neither with Microsoft nor with any third party.
Any user must authenticate with Windows Hello (PIN or biometrics) to open the Recall app.
Users can add certain apps or websites to a block list so that their information is not saved.
Sensitive information such as passwords and credit card numbers is automatically filtered out, although Microsoft admits it is not 100% reliable.
Click to Do – Smart AI Actions
When you open an old snapshot in the Recall app, you can take AI-based actions on the content in it, called Click to Do.
For example, if you see a T-shirt in a video that you liked, this feature can scan that snapshot and give you the option to search for that T-shirt on Bing.
You can select text or images and use several AI options, such as:
- Ask Copilot
- Summarize
- Create Bulleted List
- Rewrite
You can also access Click to Do from the Start Menu, “Windows key + click”, “Windows key + Q”, Snipping Tool, or Print Screen. Semantic Indexing – The new way to search smarter
Semantic Indexing is a new technology that understands your computer’s files, settings, and other content with the help of AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP).
Now, you can find files and data not just by keywords but by asking in natural language, like “that PDF that had a rent agreement.”
This search option will now work in the following places:
- Recall app
- Start Menu
- Windows Search bar
- File Explorer
- Settings app
Also, it will work in images saved in OneDrive and locally saved images.
Limitations and availability
These features will currently be available only for Copilot+ PCs, which are equipped with the latest AI chips from the Qualcomm Snapdragon X series, AMD, and Intel. For this, an NPU with a minimum of 40+ TOPS is required.
These features are currently available in only a few languages: English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
Users in European regions will have to wait a little longer for these features.
Release information
Recall, Click to Do, and Semantic Indexing are available in the Release Preview Channel of Windows 11 via Build 26100.3902 (KB5055627). This is the same channel where Microsoft tests new features and updates before the official launch.
Patch Tuesday update date: May 13, 2025. This is the day when the official gradual rollout of all these AI features will begin.
If you are a Copilot+ PC user, this update is going to give a new AI-powered to your Windows experience.
